Dan specialises in complex, high-value, cross-border litigation and international arbitration with a particular focus on large-scale fraud and asset recovery.

He has acted for clients from around the globe, including a significant number from China, Russia and former CIS countries. Tenacious and totally committed to his clients, he is ranked in both the Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 directories, where he is described as “indefatigable, excellent on the law, thoughtful, insightful, and brilliant with clients” and “one of the great arbitration practitioners of his generation”.

Dan has litigated at all levels of the English courts and has acted as counsel in arbitrations under all of the major institutional rules, as well as in investor-state disputes.

Before joining Gresham Legal, Dan was a partner at specialist disputes boutique Cooke, Young & Keidan LLP, having previously practised at international law firms Osborne Clarke, SJ Berwin and King & Wood Mallesons LLP. He is a member of the Commercial Fraud Lawyers Association, British-Russian Law Association, Law Society of England and Wales and Russian and CIS Arbitration Network.

Daniel’s representative experience includes:

  • Public Institute for Social Security v Al Rajaan & Ors: Acting for two corporate defendants in $850m alleged fraud claims brought by a branch of the Kuwaiti state.

  • Bucher-Haefner v Lewinsohn & Anor [2022] EWHC 2080 (Ch): Representing the Claimant in a Part 8 Claim for an anti-suit injunction in respect of litigation brought in Utah, USA.

  • GI Globinvestment Ltd & Ors v XY ERS UK & Ors: Acting for two corporate entities in respect of a very substantial financial services dispute.

  • Acting for the successful respondent in Symbion Power LLC v Venco Imtiaz Construction Company [2017] EWHC 348 (TCC).

  • Acting for the successful claimant in Eastern European Engineering Limited v Vijay Construction (Proprietary) Limited [2018] EWHC 2713 (Comm).

  • Acting for a major Brazilian renewable energy provider in long-running ICC arbitration proceedings seated in Brazil.

  • Acting for a Russian airline in complex fraud proceedings.

  • Advising members of a very well-known Italian family in contentious trust proceedings.

  • Defending cross-border bankruptcy proceedings brought against a high-profile individual.

  • Acted for the claimant investors in Diag Human SE and Mr. Josef Stava v. The Czech Republic, PCA Case No. 2018-20.

  • Successfully prosecuting claims in fraud arising out of a massive ticketing scam in Wirecard Bank & Another v Scott & Others [2010] EWHC 451 (QB).
